Jorge Luis Morales Cruz

Learn the key principles to avoid and manage risky situations and protect your physical and mental integrity

Hello everyone, welcome to my self defense blog. Today I want to share with you some basic principles that can help us protect ourselves from dangerous or violent situations. These principles are:

  • Defend before attacking.

  • Dodge before defending.

  • Escape before dodge.

  • Avoid rather than escape.

  • Attack, but only if you have no choice

What does this mean? It means that our priority must always be to preserve our physical and mental integrity, and not enter into unnecessary or risky confrontations. It is not about being cowardly or weak, but about being intelligent and prudent. Let's look at each of these principles in more detail.

Defend before attacking: If someone attacks or threatens us, the first thing we should do is try to defend ourselves, either using our hands, an object within our reach, or our words. We must not respond with the same violence or aggressiveness, as this can escalate the conflict and endanger our lives or that of other people. In addition, attacking can have legal or moral consequences that we do not want to assume. Therefore, the best

is defending firmly but without causing more damage than necessary.

Dodge before defending: Sometimes defending can be difficult or impossible, especially if the attacker is stronger, faster, or has a weapon. In those cases, it's best to try to dodge the attack, either by moving sideways, crouching, jumping, or running. Dodging allows us to gain time and space to find a way out or help. It also prevents us from receiving blows or injuries that can weaken or incapacitate us.

Escape before dodging: However, dodging isn't always enough to get you out of danger. Sometimes the abuser may chase us or continue to attack us endlessly. In those cases, it is best to try to escape as quickly as possible from the place where we are. Running away allows us to put a safe distance between ourselves and the aggressor, and seek refuge or an authority that protects us. It also prevents us from getting into a hostage or kidnapping situation that can be very traumatic.

Avoid rather than escape: But the best way to protect ourselves is to avoid getting into risky situations from the start. This implies being careful with the people we associate with, the places we frequent and the decisions we make. Avoiding means being alert and aware of our surroundings, and not exposing ourselves to situations that could trigger aggression or violence. It also means respecting others and not provoking or offending them.

Attack, but only if you have no other choice: Despite following these principles, there may be extreme cases in which our life or someone else's life is at stake, and we have no other choice. option to attack the aggressor to defend or save ourselves. In those cases, we must use all our strength and determination to neutralize the attacker as quickly as possible, and then escape or call for help. Attacking should always be the last resort, and only when there is no other way out.

I hope these principles are useful to you and help you feel more secure and confident in your day to day. Remember that self defense is not just a physical technique, but

But also a mental and emotional attitude. Thanks for reading and until next time.
